(20/02/04) British companies are being encouraged to share their experiences of bidding for public sector contracts in Europe, as part of an investigation into allegations of discrimination.

Government-appointed Wood-Review will investigate the issue and its findings will be published in the summer.

Speaking to the BBC, Jonathan Todd, internal markets spokesman for the European Commission said: “There is most certainly an issue about member states not opening up their public procurement markets as much as we would like them too.

“Unfortunately almost all member states have at one time or the other failed to open up contracts to competition.”

Alan Wood, chief executive of Siemens UK is leading the review. He said: “We are urging businesses to share their experiences with us so we can then decide what is the best course of action for the UK government to take.”
