The National Committee for Electrical Installations confirmed changes to the cable colours in fixed electrical installations at its recent meeting.
Cables in domestic premises will change from red and black to brown (for phase) and blue (for neutral) respectively. The change will align the electrical installation wiring colours with those of flexible cables used for appliances and equipment.
These changes will be detailed in Amendment no. 2, and the updated BS 7671:2001, IEE Wiring Regulations, which will be published on 31 March 2004, permitting cables with new colours to be used from this date. This amendment will also introduce a new appendix aimed at providing guidance on connecting alterations and additions that are wired in the old colours to electrical installations that have been wired in the new colours.
There will be a two-year overlap period during which cables in the old colours or new colours, but not both, will be able to be used. After March 31 2006, only installations that have been wired in the new colours will be permitted.
Copies of the IEE Wiring Regulations publications are available by calling 01438 767328. New versions of BS 7671:2001 and the IEE On Site Guide will be available from 1 April 2004.
Further information on the changes to cable colours can be obtained from www.iee.org/cablecolours.
