JARVIS RAIL CHOOSES MITA FOR MERSEY CROSSING

Heavy-duty industrial cable-ladder manufactured and supplied by MITA cable management specialists, has enabled railway engineering contractors Jarvis Rail, to complete a challenging sub surface cable installation on time and to budget. The £150,000 project formed part of a continuous programme of infrastructure refurbishment being carried out by the company on Liverpool's Merseyrail network.

Standard Wibe type KHZP cable ladder from Mita's industrial cable support range has been installed by Jarvis Rail in existing tunnels which carry the rail link between Liverpool and Birkenhead. The ladder provides a rugged support system over a total length of around 1000 metres and has been designed to carry low voltage control wiring, fibre-optic data-communications network cabling and an initial run of four 1,000mm single-core, pvc insulated power cables. These replace the existing obsolescent cables supplying power to trains on the standard Third-rail system and form a key section of the 750 volt DC feeder network.

The section of the network forming the main rail connection between Liverpool and Birkenhead is some seven route-miles in length and includes the crossing beneath the River Mersey. Running in twin-bore tunnels designed and constructed more than 120 years ago by Victorian engineers for the steam-powered railway, the original system underwent electrification during the early 1900s.
