JTL, the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) are to hold a one day conference entitled Meeting the Skills Shortage with Diversity, to tackle the growing skills shortage in the industry for electricians and plumbers, on 29th April 2003 in London.

The objective of the conference will be to engage key employers, industry bodies, government departments and agencies to develop and endorse an industry wide action plan to help meet the current skills shortage by encouraging greater diversity in the workforce, which will reflect the composition of wider society. John Piennar, political journalist, will be leading the debates.

The conference will take the format of keynote presentations, which will enable delegates to gain a better understanding of the policy issues and positions of the key bodies within the industry, and workshop sessions, which will provide an opportunity to engage in debate and develop the industry action plan. Industry practitioners who have experienced the benefits and are aware of the issues that need to be addressed will also present the business case for diversity within the industry.

For the three partner bodies hosting the conference, the development of the industry action plan will be of key importance and will act as a benchmark to which progress of the issues can be measured.
