DTI approves a further 19 solar power schemes

The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) has issued a £2.2m grant to 19 solar power schemes.

The three largest projects include a multi-storey car park in Woking, a coastal visitor centre in Llanelli and the University of Leicester building; these three account for nearly half of the total grant. There are also a number of smaller scale projects throughout the UK, including flats in London, a school in Hertfordshire and a health centre in Bristol.

These are the second set of proposals to be approved under the DTI's £20m major photovoltaic demonstration programme.

To promote solar power further, the DTI has set up Renewables UK, based at the department's Aberdeen offices, to "secure maximum benefits for British manufacturers from the rapidly-growing worldwide green energy market".
